Virtual classroom labor market training with distance learning

Video editing is a six-week virtual training course for those enrolled in the Culture & Media Employment Service.

The training is provided by Be Licensed - Sweden's official training partner for Adobe, Unity, Apple, Avid, Blackmagic Design and LearnQuest.

General information about the training

Conducted entirely remotely in virtual classrooms
Always led by Adobe, Apple, Avid and Blackmagic Design certified instructors who have extensive industry experience in professional post-production
Courses are 6 weeks long, full-time, and divided into two main segments:
4 weeks of practical educational sessions on the latest versions of Avid Media Composer, Apple Final Cut, Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as orientations in DaVinci Resolve and After Effects. The theoretical part ends with a certification exam.
2 weeks internship - Be Licensed organizes internships at leading production companies. Alternatively, the course participant can find his/her own internship.
All lectures are recorded and available to students during the course.
All technology, including high-spec Macs, is loaned to the participant during the course.
Opportunity for course participants to become certified and join the freelance register of Be Licensed's partners if the exams are passed.
All course participants will receive a 1 year Avid Media Composer EDU license to use after the course is completed.

Overview

Structural changes in the media sector have led to greater demands for diverse skills and the ability to work in different media. Many professions, such as photographers, journalists, informers and artists, now need to be able to produce film in their daily work.

The course focuses on video editing in Media Composer, Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro and a short orientation is given in the video effects program After Effects. After completing the course, there is the opportunity to take an official certification exam where the participant can become an "Apple Certified Pro" or "Avid Certified User" to use in their CV and digital marketing.

The course concludes with a two-week Workplace Based Learning (WBL) at a workplace relevant to the course. This gives the opportunity to put the knowledge gained into practice while gaining insight into one of the professional fields of video editing and the chance to make new contacts.

This course aims to equip you with the video editing skills the market demands. During the course, you will acquire a broad theoretical and practical knowledge of video editing and other post-production skills. After the course, you will have mastery of all video editing elements, from importing material to exporting the finished film.

You will also better understand how editing works as a language and how film communicates with its audience.

The training is conducted remotely and held in an online virtual classroom. We tailor the course content to the individual skills of the participants and provide loan computers and software for all participants.

Course outline

During the first 4 weeks of the course, we will go through the programs Avid Media Composer, Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro. This provides a basic understanding of all stages of video editing and covers the programs' features, interfaces and working methods. The course covers the following elements of the programs:

Importing, exporting
Interfaces and tools
Playing, selecting and sorting material
Drag-and-drop editing
Three-point cutting
Magnetic Timeline (Final Cut Pro)
Trimming footage
Managing multiple video and audio tracks
Effects
Sound mixing
Keyframes
Color correction
Titles
Management and backup of material and projects
Efficient working methods

We also cover practical theory about editing to provide a better understanding of how it works as a language. The objective is to better understand the editor's choices and how these affect communication with the audience in different ways. After the course, you will have a better ability to answer questions such as when should I cut, to what and why, and how does this affect the audience's experience, understanding and feeling?

In addition, one day will be devoted to a brief orientation of the Adobe After Effects program, to provide an overview of this program's possibilities.

The course concludes with 2 weeks of on-the-job learning (APL), a supervised internship at a media company.

*NOTE: Currently, the internship component is arranged in a distance learning format, where the course participant works entirely from home and completes the internship. This is due to the current COVID-19 virus outbreak.
