Course Purpose

The course provides advanced and professionally grounded competence in colour correction and colour grading with a focus on professional workflows, industry standards and visual expression within film and video production. The education develops the student’s ability to work independently with colour management, technical quality assurance and artistic judgement in professional post-production environments.

The course covers colour theory, colour science concepts, colour spaces and colour management, as well as work in DaVinci Resolve. Students develop practical skills in primary and secondary colour correction, node-based workflows, camera matching, and working with SDR, HDR, log, RAW and ACES-based workflows.

AI-based functions are integrated as part of the professional workflow, for example for colour matching, noise reduction and optimisation of grading processes. The course also addresses technical delivery requirements, documented decisions and quality assurance in relation to established industry practice.

After completing the course, the student shall be able to plan, carry out and quality assure a complete grading process at a professional level and justify technical, aesthetic and workflow-related decisions in relation to the purpose of the project, target audience and distribution channel.

Course Content

The course covers professional colour correction and colour grading within film and video production.

The course includes, among other things:

  • colour theory and colour science fundamentals such as gamma, contrast, colour spaces, white balance and saturation
  • colour management in professional workflows for SDR, HDR, log, RAW and ACES-based productions
  • DaVinci Resolve’s colour tools and node-based structure for colour grading
  • primary and secondary colour correction using masks, power windows, keying and tracking
  • use of scopes and reference monitors for technical quality assurance
  • creative colour grading and visual storytelling through colour strategies and colour schemes
  • development and implementation of LUTs as well as work with visual references and mood boards
  • AI-based tools for colour matching, noise reduction and optimisation of workflows
  • technical delivery requirements, export formats and quality control in professional post-production
  • industry practice, collaboration in production teams and communication regarding colour decisions

The course includes practical elements where the student works with material and workflows that correspond to real production conditions within professional post-production.

The course concludes with a project-based final project where the student carries out colour grading of professional material and presents technical and artistic decisions in relation to established industry standards and defined delivery requirements.

Course Objectives

After completing the course with a passing result, the student shall be able to:

Knowledge

  • explain the principles of colour theory, colour spaces and lighting in professional colour grading contexts
  • analyse the role of colour in visual storytelling, mood and communication
  • describe differences between workflows for SDR, HDR, log and RAW material as well as colour management in ACES
  • explain colour science concepts such as gamma, contrast, saturation, white balance and dynamic range
  • identify and interpret technical standards, delivery requirements and established workflows in professional post-production

Skills

  • apply advanced methods for colour correction and colour grading in DaVinci Resolve in professional film and video projects
  • use scopes, reference monitors and colour control tools to ensure technically correct exposure, colour balance and delivery according to current standards
  • perform primary and secondary corrections using masks, power windows, keying and tracking
  • handle different material types and workflows such as log, RAW, SDR and HDR material and work within ACES-based colour management systems
  • use AI-based functions for colour matching, noise reduction and optimisation of workflows
  • develop and implement LUTs, colour schemes and visual references to support consistent aesthetic expression

Competence

  • independently plan, carry out and quality assure colour grading for film and video productions at a professional level
  • analyse and evaluate colour and light balance from technical, aesthetic and narrative perspectives and adjust grading strategies based on the purpose and target audience of the project
  • make well-founded decisions regarding colour management, delivery formats and workflows in relation to different distribution channels and technical standards
  • communicate and collaborate professionally with directors, cinematographers, producers and other roles in the production team regarding colour and visual direction
  • develop and justify a consistent visual colour language that strengthens storytelling and artistic coherence

Teaching Methods

Teaching is conducted through a combination of theoretical instruction, supervised laboratory work, practical colour grading exercises and project work.

The course includes, among other things:

  • theoretical instruction
  • supervised laboratory work
  • practical work in DaVinci Resolve
  • work with industry-related material and cases
  • individual feedback
  • independent work with a final project

Assessment

Assessment is carried out through practical exercises, assignments and a final project.

The assessment concerns the student’s ability to:

  • apply professional workflows for colour correction and colour grading
  • use and evaluate technical tools, scopes and colour management strategies in relation to technical and artistic requirements
  • analyse and justify technical, aesthetic and workflow-related decisions
  • quality assure results according to established delivery requirements and industry standards
  • plan, carry out and present a complete grading process with documented decisions and defined technical delivery requirements

Assessment requires independence, problem-solving ability, critical analysis and professional responsibility in realistic post-production situations.
